This tour is a must-see 30 minutes from Del Rio on the way to San Antonio just off I-90. Historic Fort Clark is also located in town, which first served as a pioneer outpost to protect against Indian and Mexican raids. Alamo Village was originally built for The Alamo, John Wayne's film, and was expanded to include a replica of San Antonio as a wild west town. Many westerns have been filmed here, and we are encourage by the long-term plans to make it into a major tourist attraction.

Villa Del Rio B&B, Del Rio, Texas
This west Texas b&b is steeped in old world charm, and is the oldest mansion in the area. Built around 1887, the property features stately palms, pecan trees, and the oldest magnolia tree in the state.
Jay Johnson, the owner of Villa Del Rio, is working to bring a Wolfman Jack museum here. Wolfman Jack became famous as a DJ at nearby XERA. The radio station at one time was powered by 1 million watts and could be heard around the world. Although he died several years ago, his show is still popular in syndication. Listen to his daily show online.
There are four guest rooms, each with a different theme. The spacious Peacock Room which we stayed in included a queen-sized bed, and was tastefully decorated. The private bathroom is original, and was the first indoor bath in town. The tongue and groove wood floors are original to the house.
A small day room (perfect for kids to stay in) connects to the Peacock Room, and a screened in sun porch overlooks the grounds.
Scenes from the Paul Newman movie adorn the masculine Judge Roy Bean Room. Appointed with a queen-sized poster bed, this comfortable room has views of the fountain and grounds.
Named after the British actress, the Lily Langtry Room is decorated in bright yellow and peach colors, with a queen-sized cast iron bed. Judge Roy Bean was said to have been a keen admirer of hers but they never met. The Inn manager also has on display dresses which were worn by her grandmother, including her wedding dress. The private bath connects to the Judge Roy Bean Room, perfect for families and friends.
Two twin beds adorn The Magnolia Room, with quilt wall hangings. The windows provide views of the front yard overlooking the magnolia and palm trees.
For your morning start, fresh coffee is delivered to your room. Our breakfast feast began downstairs in the dining room with a selection of 13 different fresh fruits overlooking the garden patio area. This was followed by crapes with homemade jalepeno, a large serving of ham, with coffee and juices. You will not need to have lunch after this wonderful breakfast.
For relaxing, there is a large living room, which includes original hand-painted Italian tile floors, with large glass table, expansive leather couch, recliners, cable television, and plenty of books highlighting the local history.
A three tier fountain adorns the grounds, which includes lots of koi fish. A mineral spring was active on the property at one time, and used as a bath and medicinal drink by James Mason, the original owner. The water was tested as being the best quality in the world. Val Verde Winery, the state's oldest winery, is located on the next street.
The owner, Jay Johnson, and manager, Sarah Boone, have done an exceptional job with renovation and hospitality, and we would like to thank them for assisting with our feature.
