Remembering those who sacrificed
Memorial Day comes to most as a holiday for the official start of summer. Created to honor those who died in the Civil War, and then expanded after WWI, the holiday has special meaning for military families.
Here is a quote from a WWII veteran - "The people today...do not really
know what the price of freedom really is. They don't really know the
sacrifices that were made to have the free country we have now."
-
Alson Boleware, U.S. Army veteran of WWII
An email was sent to me today which is noted here.
It is the
VETERAN, not the preacher, who has given us freedom of religion.
It is the VETERAN, not the reporter, who has given us freedom of the press.
It is the VETERAN, not the poet, who has given us freedom of speech.
It is the VETERAN, not the campus organizer, who has given us freedom to assemble.
It is the VETERAN, not the lawyer, who has given us the right to a fair trial.
It is the VETERAN, not the politician, Who has given us the right to vote.
It is the VETERAN who salutes the Flag,
It is the VETERAN who
serves under the Flag,
ETERNAL REST GRANT THEM O LORD,
AND LET PERPETUAL LIGHT SHINE UPON THEM.
As you celebrate this special holiday named in honor of the veterans who died fighting for our country, take a second from having that picnic, with watermelon, making homemade ice cream, aand thank them for paying the ultimate price of their lives for the freedoms we are able to continue to enjoy today. Hollywood will always create make believe ones like Indiana Jones, but our veterans and active military are and will always be our true heroes. Happy Memorial Day everyone
