Windermere Hotel, London, UK

The Windermere Hotel is centrally located within easy walking distance from several leading area attractions, including Buckingham Palace, Westminster Abbey, Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament, Tate Gallery, and the Cabinet War Rooms.

The hotel has a rich history, with the distinction of being the earliest known bed & breakfast hotel in the London area (dating to 1881, when then known as the Pimlico Rooms), and the building originally served as a pair of Victorian residences when built in 1857.

The comfortable twenty-two guest rooms available include telephone with direct dial, modem access, wireless Internet, television with satellite channels, radio with alarm, hairdryer, in-room safe, and hospitality tray. There is also video conferencing capability available for the business executive. Each room comes with either King, Queen, Double or Twin beds. Depending on the size of room, the private bathroom may include shower or bath with shower. There are larger rooms available for families or groups.

Our room was on the second floor in a Premier Twin room. There are decorative heavy drapes to block the outside light in case you want to have a late afternoon nap.

From the dining room downstairs, we enjoyed a Continental breakfast selection of cereals, fruit, juice, yogurt, toast, and coffee, and an English breakfast of scrambled eggs, salmon, and Eggs Benedict. An overhead television is nearby to get you caught up on the daily news. The professional staff was courteous and quite friendly.

There is also a bar and small lounge area for reclining, reading, or checking your email.

Rates range from $181 to $273 (£99 to £149 GBP) a night for a guest room, depending on size of room and the season (rates are subject to change without notice).

State of Augustus Caesar and the London Wall at Tower of London, London, England
Statue of Augustus Caesar at the Tower of London with a portion of the original Roman wall in the background. Located here and a few areas around London are still remnants of the London Wall built by the Romans around 200 A.D. Built for defense and to control the flow of commerce into London, the wall was originally over 21 feet (6.4 meters) high, and heightened more during medieval times.
