Enjoy Aquatic Animal Adventures at Texas State Aquarium

by Rhonda Burnham

Enjoy a day of aquatic animal adventures at Texas State Aquarium in Corpus Christi. Watch dolphins fly through the air in the outdoor Dolphin Bay show. Be sure to get there at least 15 minutes early, as the dolphin show is very popular.

Touch live stingrays at Stingray Flats and hermit crabs, lightning whelks, and pencil urchins in the Living Shores exhibits.
We got a kick out of feeling the stingrays and the hermit crabs.

Laugh at the antics of the playful river otters at Otter Creek. See poison dart frogs and snakes in the Amazon exhibit.
There are at least 500 known species of hermit crabs in the world.

The sea turtle tank and 40,000 gallon coral reef exhibits with several diver shows a day will also amaze you.
Sea turtles can stay underwater for several hours at a time, and have a lifespan up to 80 years.

Over 1,000 animals represent over 300 different species. The new Eagle Pass area contains birds of prey including Grace the bald eagle. Next to Eagle Pass is the Hawn Wild Flight Theater where several daily shows feature a variety of trained birds, including hawks, owls, falcons and parrots, and other exotic small mammals. All of these shows and exhibits are included in admission price.

For a close-up hands-on experience, the Texas State Aquarium offers several programs available for an additional fee beyond the admission price to gain a unique insight into the animals. This includes the Deckside Dolphin Encounter program where you can feed, play with and touch one of the dolphins! You will even get into the water with your dolphin. In the "Trainer for a Day" program you can be a Dolphin Trainer for a day. Work side-by-side with one of the dolphin trainers. Prepare for and participate in a dolphin presentation. Discover what dolphins eat, assist in preparing their food, and help feed them. Learn the methods used to train dolphins, and put your new skills into practice. Receive your very own "Trainer for a Day" certificate.

Also available is the "Behind the Scenes Tour" You'll see where the aquarium cares for animals, how they prepare food, and where they keep newcomers before they can be seen by the public. Plus, you'll see how pumps, pipes, and filters work together to keep the animals and plants healthy.

The aquarium includes a large gift shop and food court area. There are both indoor and outdoor exhibits so check the weather and wear comfortable shoes.

We would like to thank the Texas State Aquarium for assisting with our feature.
