The Villa Bed & Breakfast, Galveston, Texas
A Charming B&B Nearest to the Beach
by Carl Burnham
Located just a short walk from the beach, in the Silk Stocking historic district, the Villa B&B is of a Mediterranean stucco style architecture with a distinctive front porch topped with wooden rafters that have curved tailings. Built in 1914, the Inn includes three guest rooms appointed with exquisite antiques throughout, a porch, with secluded courtyard to relax after a hearty breakfast.
Front Entrance By Stairway
When entering the Villa through the impressive 4 1/2 foot wide front doorway to the large hallway, you instantly feel at home. The main parlor areas are appointed with antique sofas and chairs, satellite TV, reading materials, large fireplace, and ample room for relaxing. We especially enjoyed playing downstairs with the owner's two friendly and well mannered Bishan/poodles, Dolly Momma and Raz-ma-Taz.
Besides the front porch and yard, with Knock Out roses that bloom year-round, the back courtyard has huge Bougainvilleas blooms, with the smell of jasmine in the air. A barbeque grill is available for guests, with a new porch just added next to the fish pond.
From beginnings as a residence in 1914 for Dr. and Mrs. Henry C. Haden, the Inn retains it's unique island charm, such as original wood flooring that was salvaged lumber from the 1900 Storm and fascinating antiques throughout. In addition to guests, the Inn is a popular venue for weddings and social events.
Each of the guest rooms are equipped with queen-sized beds, armoire, as well as modern conveniences such as CD clock radio, satellite TV, with DVD, air conditioning and heating, and their own private bathrooms. The hallway by the guest rooms has snacks and a stocked refrigerator with soft drinks and champagne. Coffee as you like it is brewed fresh every morning waiting for you before breakfast. A sunroom and reading room is next to the back of the house which exits downstairs to the courtyard.

Taz Dressed to the Nines
While we were there, we met friendly neighbors of the Silk Stocking District who held a party prior to going out Christmas caroling. All own houses that are at least 100 years old, each representing a rich heritage of the island. One large house with 47 bedrooms across the street at the corner was in the process of being repaired. Dating to 1896, it is the former Letitia Rosenberg Home for Aged Women that was built by Alfred Muller. It was saved from being torn down, and is going through a multi-million dollar renovation.
