Old Settler's Music Festival, Driftwood, Texas
April 2007, by Carl Burnham
The vibrant bluebonnets and other wildflowers were ablaze with color around Driftwood just outside of Austin as laid back music lovers came to soak up the varied soulful and foot stomping bluegrass of Old Settler's Music Festival. It's all about the music. Not only bluegrass, expect to hear a range from country, reggae, gospel, and a little rock in the mix.
The talent here is vast, from old favorites like Keller Williams to gifted youngsters like Sarah Jarosz, an up and coming mandolin, guitar, and clawhammer banjo wonder from nearby Wimberly, Texas.
The most fun I imagine is at Camp Ben McCulloch, where RVers and tenters get to hear bands like the Texas Swing Kings starting on Thursday, attend various workshops on bango, fiddle, and guitar playing, and have a laid back good time the whole weekend. Kids have alot of fun things to do if they get tired of listening to the music, from the petting zoo, to pony rides, a climbing wall, slides, and more.
Many lined up outside the Salt Lick, where the mouth watering barbeque sandwiches are a must and then lounged around the shade of Onion Creek. As face painted kids chased each other around food stands along the edge of the crowds, many adults meandered around to the nearby stages to try and hear all the artists playing.
