Cloudland Canyon State Park - Georgia Cloudland Canyon State Park is situated high on the western edge of Lookout Mountain near Chattanooga. The 2200-acre park is one of the most scenic parks in northern Georgia. The canyon is a great gash cut into the earth by Sitton Gulch Creek. It varies from an elevation of 1800 feet to less than 800 feet. Overlooks on the canyon rim provide breathtaking views and a wooden stairway takes you down to the bottom of the canyon. Though short, the stairway is steep and strenuous. More than 6 miles of backcountry trails are available for hiking. Lots of picnic tables and pavillions are available. The Park Service offers several annual special events with a Crafts in the Clouds show the third weekend in May, a wildflower program in May, and an overnight backpacking trip in October. Camping is available on the rim of the canyon. 75 tent and trailer sites are available along with a 40-bed group camp, 16 rental cottages, a group shelter, a swimming pool, playground, tennis courts and 30 walk-in campsites. Cottages especially need to be booked well in advance. A 6-mile backcountry loop winds through some beautiful wilderness area. Camping is allowed on the trail but a permit from the park office is required. The West Rim Loop Trail winds along the canyon rim and back for almost 5 miles. This trail is fairly easy and allows views of the park's 3 gorges. The park is on Lookout Mountain about 10 miles south of Chattanooga, TN on Georgia Highway 136. It is 8 miles east of Trenton, GA and I-59 and 18 miles west of Lafayette, GA. The park is open daily from 7 am to 10 pm with the office open from 8 am until 5 pm.
