South Padre Island: tourists welcome with fireworks fanfare
As many have seen via the news, this Category 2 hurricane made a direct
hit at South Padre Island with 100 mph winds and water surges. Things
are quickly getting back to normal on the island. I will be posting
updates here as I receive them directly from South Padre Island
officials for tourists wanting to visit.
Latest
Updates for Wednesday, July 30, 2008 from South Padre Island --
Just
got the great news that the KOA
at South Padre Island that we featured recently from our visit now
has electricity and is welcoming RVers and guests again --
"We now have electricity! It was restored at 6 PM Wednesday evening. We
will reopen on Thursday morning at 10 AM. Electricity, sewer, and water
services should be normal. Cable TV and Wi-Fi have not yet been restored
(Time Warner is working on it). Please come see us soon!"

More
than 75 percent of South Padre Island now has electricity, according to
American Electric Power, and the Queen Isabella Memorial Bridge is open
to all traffic.
According to AEP, power is expected to reach over 90 percent at the end of the day.
“We welcome our tourists back to South Padre Island, but we ask you to ‘pardon our dust,’” said Mayor Robert N. Pinkerton Jr. “Our warm, sandy beaches are open, and the weather’s fantastic.
“We will continue with our usual Friday fireworks display, and it will be a special one,” Pinkerton added. “The display will symbolize South Padre’s grand re-opening and resilience after a rather difficult time. This is your Island, and we want you to enjoy it with us.”
The fireworks display kicks off at 9:15 p.m. over the Laguna Madre Bay Friday between Marlin and Red Snapper streets.
Parasailing above South Padre Island, one of the many fun things to do on the island.
